Toilet Paper

The Toilet Paper is not the paper roll which has been used commonly in the toilet, but which is considered as an informal media platform, contains various types of pop-up information or small knowledges which spread sparkling ideas in the toilet. Most of them have been printed on the recycling papers or cheap materials, with multitudinous and various types of format and sizes, which gained its name “toilet” paper.

The characteristic of toilet paper is ironic. The contents are mainly concerned on social issues and always trying to provide fresh ideas to the public in a humorous way.

The action of hacking the toilet was an idea that came up together with my friends in 2014, that originally, we want to spread out our portfolios in the University's Toilet, providing some readable ideas in a public but also intimate space.  Since 4 of us are all working in the field of design, the basic idea of the paper is anonymous, and with simple pictorial works.

Later on, in 2015, I wrote some short urban rumours (or tales) which inspired by the book Invisible Cities (Le città invisibili), by Italo Calvino, and I printed them in small size recycling papers. The urban rumours were basic on my observations of strangers in the area of Taojin (Guangzhou), and they were been spread out in the public toilets, such as cafes, fast-food canteens. On each of the paper, there was no any other information except the story itself, and 4 series were been released by that time.

These basically formed the idea of the Toilet Paper (in Vienna), and rebooting the action of hacking the toilet.

issue#1 Heu! Neighbors!

"Pausing bench" "smoking bar" "colored path"

The Social Design Studio moved from the mall Wien Mitte (Landstrasse) to Am Heumarkt recently, and we were concerned about how to make ourselves visible in this new neighborhood: engaging with the building residence, staffs of ice-skating park, hotel visitors and the passers-by...

Heu meaning Hi in some languages, and markt in German meaning a market place. Am Heumarkt in Vienna shared a courtyard with Vienna's famous ice-skating park and Intercontinental Hotel.

In order to connect the studio from inside to outside, and built up a network exchanging the ideas among other social designers, this collection of toilet paper shown a draft design intervention, and an ice breaking slogan.

The design interventions contain a series of new pieces of furniture on the ground floor and the studio entrance, which is an open area to the passers-by and the building residences/users. The aim of the new intervention is to trigger dialogue in (Am) Heumarkt by simply saying "Heu!" facilitated by the new public furniture ("Pausing bench" "smoking bar" "colored path").

issue #2 MA 35

// Residential Permit Card

The following up issue 2 is about MA 35 where outlanders gain their official Residential Permit Card. And it's been released in the toilet yearly.

To gain a residential permit card for legally resident/study in EU, none EUs have to visit the local authorities to apply for this. However, the first cultural shock every applicants have to face on is the language.

English or German, when you taking the duty of immigration officer, facing foreigners from various religions everyday, will you still say 'Grüß Gott (greeting to god)' as a response to his/her 'Good morning'?

Nowadays looking for in a relationship or a partner through dating Apps is common and trendy. And OkCupid App is specifically calculating user's matches rate though few questionaries, i.e. Politically, which are more important to you right now. Moreover, users could also emphasise the importance of the question and set up their tendency answers from the others. While chatting freely, the system also provided their match's percentages and detailed questionnaire answers, as professional job interviews.

Rethinking of these social based questions, it's very interesting that how they select these questions, why it matters to a relationship and what kind of politics, law, religions questions should be included as an important part of a dating situation and so on. This toilet paper issue is trying to redefine our social design relationships in a similar way, by collecting the detailed answers towards different respects and see how much common ideology we have inside the studio, whether if we can triggering a break or a deeper harmony.
